Full-Scale Operational Safety Drill at Mexico City International Airport (AICM)
Benito Juárez International Airport (AICM) in Mexico City conducted a full-scale operational safety drill as part of its ongoing preventive measures and continuous improvement efforts in emergency response.
The exercise was based on the scenario of a critical in-flight event: the sudden death of the pilot due to cardiac arrest, with the co-pilot taking control of the aircraft and continuing to landing, where a simulated landing gear fire was triggered upon runway contact.
The main objective of the drill was to evaluate the effectiveness of the airport’s Emergency Plan and to identify opportunities to strengthen protocols and interagency coordination. Regular airport operations were not affected, as the exercise was carried out on the emergency ramp— a safe area away from active runways and terminal buildings.
The drill was coordinated by Grupo Aeroportuario Marina, with active participation from:
The Naval Airport Protection Unit (UNAPAP) of the Mexican Navy
- The Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC)
- Air Navigation Services of Mexico (SENEAM)
- AICM’s Operations, Safety, Medical Services, Fire Department, and Civil Protection departments
- Magnicharters airline and various service providers and relevant authorities
During the exercise, representatives from AFAC supervised and evaluated the performance of the emergency response teams, aiming to strengthen the airport’s ability to respond to real-life critical situations.
Through this drill, AICM reaffirms its commitment to operational safety and continuous improvement, ensuring coordinated and effective processes for the benefit of both passengers and airport personnel.
