Mexico Takes Off Again in the Aerospace Industry: Introducing the Halcón 2.0, the First 100% Mexican Light Sport Aircraft

✈️ A historic event marked the rebirth of Mexico’s aerospace industry. At the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), the Ministry of Economy, led by Marcelo Ebrard, presented certificate number 001 for a light sport aircraft to the Halcón 2.0, an airplane fully designed and manufactured by the Mexican company Horizontec.

🇲🇽 Mexico Returns to Aircraft Manufacturing

After more than six decades without registering a domestically made aircraft, Mexico is officially back on the aerospace production map. The Horizontec plant, located in Celaya, Guanajuato, is now responsible for developing the first 100% Mexican aircraft certified for serial production.

This achievement, the result of over 11 years of dedicated work, marks a turning point for the national aerospace sector.

“This is certificate 001, which means Mexico is back in aviation... we’re going far. We’re currently the 12th-largest aerospace producer globally, and we aim to reach the top 10,” said Marcelo Ebrard.

The Secretary of Economy also praised the effort of the Horizontec team and its CEO, Giovanni Angelucci, who achieved this milestone without any government support, relying entirely on private funding.

🛫 Halcón 2.0: The Aeronautical Dream Becomes Reality

The Halcón 2.0 is a light sport aircraft (LSA) designed for pilot training, aerial surveillance, and tourism flights. Thanks to its low operating cost—just $1,200 MXN per flight hour, compared to $4,000 for a conventional aircraft—it is a highly attractive option for flight schools and private operators.

Developed since 2018 at the National Center for Aeronautical Technologies (CENTA) in Querétaro, the Halcón 2.0 has evolved into a reliable and safe engineering platform, now ready for mass production.

Horizontec has already secured purchase commitments for at least 12 aircraft from flight schools across Mexico.

“We’re proving that it is possible to design and build airplanes in Mexico. This aircraft meets international standards, it’s safe, and most importantly: it’s made in Mexico,” said Angelucci.

      ✨ Halcón 2.0 Key Features:

      Type: Light Sport Aircraft (LSA)

      Capacity: 2 people (including pilot)

      Fuel: Premium Gasoline

      Maximum Speed: 120 knots (~222 km/h)

      Stall Speed: 45 knots (~83 km/h)

      Operating Cost: $1,200 MXN/hour

      Primary Uses: Training, patrol, recreation

Thanks to its technical specifications, the Halcón 2.0 helps democratize aviation by being simpler, more affordable, and easier to operate than conventional aircraft.

🚀 A Project That Has Already Crossed Borders

The Halcón 2.0 has successfully passed flight tests in challenging conditions, such as those at Atizapán Airport (Mexico State), known for its rugged terrain and adverse weather. It has also flown in the United States, participating in the prestigious Sun ’n Fun Aerospace Expo, one of North America’s most important aviation events.

      🏗️ Looking Ahead

The Horizontec plant is already equipped with molds to produce over 100 fuselages and is currently undergoing certification for its full manufacturing line.

For now, the Halcón 2.0 is available for sale as an experimental aircraft, and once the first three units are sold, it is expected to receive full certification for serial production.

🌎 Mexico Is Flying Again... and It Has No Plans to Land

With the Halcón 2.0, Mexico takes a bold step into a new era of innovation and technological independence in aerospace. This aircraft is not only a victory for Horizontec, but also a symbol of what’s possible for a country that, despite the odds, has the talent, the vision, and the determination to build its own future in the skies.
